Jon and Jim painted a fence. Jon painted 1/4 of the fence and Jim painted 5/12 of the fence. How much of the fence did they paint total?

Get both fractions to have the same denominator. so for 1/4 multiply it by 3 to have the fraction 3/12. 3/12+ 5/12 = 8/12. simplified you get 2/3. In total, they painted 2/3 (units) of the fence
