What was the relationship between industrialized nations and their colonies?

Industrialized nations were often exploiting their colony states and were robbing the natural resources of these states for obvious reasons. While the industrialized nations often did build up the infrastructure, it was very commonly the cases that this infrastruture was bad and the colony was worse off compared to industrialized nations not being there.
