In " walden " what does thoreau do at the beginning of the passage ? why would he perform this action

In Walden, Thoreau speaks of how he goes into the woods to live in solitary. He does this because he does not believe in big government. He thinks everyone should be independent and live their lives off of their own work. He also argued that it was in solitude, surrounded by nature, that a man learns to thrive.
