 the plasma membrane gives the cell its structure. it also allows for transport of particles into and out of the cell. 

it is referred to as a bilayer structure (or lipid bilayer structure) because it has outer and inner phosphate layers that are hydrophilic (attract water) and an inner lipid layer that is hydrophobic (resists water)
