Mental health generally decreases or deteriorates as a person goes down the social ladder.

This is because a person is usually faced with greater mental problems and fears that can cause high levels of stress. These problems and fears include lesser job security, lower wages, and the increase in likelihood of divorce, physical illness, and being a victim of crime.
