The two differed because Old Lights were more traditional and refused to change and New Lights were a religious schism that wanted to change and had religious revivals, which the Old Lights were skeptical of and felt like it threatened authority. Old Lights and New Lights happened in both Europe and the United States and were also part of the Great Awakening.
