When children are immunized, they contribute to the protection of others. this is referred to as herd immunity. If most people in a community consisting mostly of vaccinated children it will cause herd immunity. When that happens the disease can't spread fast because most of the people are already immune. Thus, herd immunity can protect the unvaccinated.
