The ducts empty the saliva from the submandibular salivary glands into the two sublingual carnicles.

The saliva produces in the salivary glands contains an enzyme named amylase, which is responsible for the chemical breakdown of starch. The saliva also helps to add moisture to the food and make it easier for it to pass through the ailementary canal. Further break down of starch then occurs when amylase is secreted into the small intestines.
