One obvious answer: it made life easier. The invention of the steam engine led to the construction of railways all over America. It lessened travel time across the large country. As for communication, with the introduction of the Morse Code, telegraph stations were also built everywhere, making communication easier. That being said, these inventions made innovation possible - it could be improved, and it was improved.
