The theory that species change over time is called Evolution. This theory was/is challenged by Christian Creationism, which claims that God created animals and humans exactly how they are today.

This belief was more prevalent in the past because the Christian church had a huge influence over society, but now evolution (specifically by Natural Selection) is widely accepted as true because of scientific education & acceptance.
