The Compromise of 1850 was the result of a four-year political confrontation between slave and free states regarding the status of territories acquired during the Mexican–American War. This bill basically stated that for every free state, there must be a slave state based on the Missouri Compromise Line (also known as the Parallel 36°30′ north line.)
