Technically it started simply because of food shortages. People revolted because of this, but it wasn't until King Louis got paranoid that it became a revolution. He ordered troops to his palace at Versailles and the townsfolk got scared and thought he would kill them, so they rebelled. This started the Great Fear, which lead to the rebellion.
