In Chater 20 of A Long way Gone by Ishmael Beha he talks about his trip to the Un conference in New York. He went to New York in 1998 so i think that the U.N. visit happened then. After visiting the U.N. and meeting other child soldier Ishmael is returned to Sierra Leone.
