In chemical reactions, the internal energy represents the total energy of the system and is often called Enthalpy. The x-axis represents the reaction progress. Chemical reactions proceed (or are read) from left to right. Therefore, looking at the potential energy diagram, the reactants are usually found to the left on the diagram and the products on the right.
