To complete the perfect square ((x-h)²) we add and subtract constants:

[tex]\begin{gathered} y=x^{2}-10x+16 \\ y=x^{2}-10x+25-25+16 \\ y=x^{2}-10x+5^{2}-9 \\ y=(x-5)^{2}-9 \end{gathered}[/tex]
