let the numbers be = x, x+1,x+2,x+3

on adding all these numbers we get -2

x+(x+1)+(x+2)+(x+3) = -2

4x + 6 = -2

4x = -2-6

4x = -8

x = -8/4

x = -2

x+1 = -2+1 = -1

x+2 = -2+2 = 0

x+3 = -2+3 = 1

therefore -2 is the smallest in the 4 consecutive numbers

hope it helps...!!!
