Solve for a: 
 -5 + 2a = -a - 8

You said                             -5 + 2a  =  -a - 8

Add  'a'  to each side:      -5 + 3a  =       -8

Add  5  to each side:                3a  =      -3

Divide each side by  3 :             a  =      -1
