Write the equation: x^2+24x+60=0 in the form of (x+p)^2=q

If you expand the "target" equation, then you get

(x + p)² = q   →   x² + 2px + p² = q   →   x² + 2px + p² - q = 0

We have to have

2p = 24   →   p = 12

p² - q = 60   →   q = 12² - 60 = 84

and so

x² + 24x + 60 = 0   ↔  (x + 12)² = 84
