How did the spanish american war lead to the us having more colonies overseas

After the Spanish-American war was ended and the Treaty of Paris (1989) was signed, the US gained Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines as territories (not technically colonies). These territories were previously held by Spain, but after the US won the war, the US acquired these territories.
