y = 3 and x = 2

y = 2(x) - 1
3 = 2(2) - 1
3 = 4 - 1
3 = 3

y = -x + 5
3 = -2 + 5
3 = 3

Solution :

{y,x} = {3,2}

System of Linear Equations entered :

[1] y - 2x = -1

[2] y + x = 5

// Solve equation [2] for the variable x

[2] x = -y + 5

// Plug this in for variable x in equation [1]

[1] y - 2•(-y +5) = -1

[1] 3y = 9

// Solve equation [1] for the variable y

[1] 3y = 9

[1] y = 3

// By now we know this much :

y = 3

x = -y+5

// Use the y value to solve for x

x = -(3)+5 = 2

Solution :

{y,x} = {3,2}
