Rhetorical modes help the author convey their message to their audience. Many stories, even nonfiction ones, have some type of moral or bigger message. Rhetorical modes such as narration help explain the message through the eyes of a character, while others such as compare/contrast help illustrate different scenarios in which the message might play out.
