After the end of the Cold War, we generally lost our sense of mission and purpose.

Having an enemy is, well, nice.

So, the US was left as the lone Superpower and started a policy of becoming the policeman of the world.

It hasn't really worked and the US has now been fighting in Afghanistan for 18 years.
